Highlights: Girl Power Edition

In honor of International Women's Day on Sunday, This edition of Highlights is all about women empowerment.

International Women's Day
This time last year I was wondering around the streets of Venice when a sweet little Italian woman handed me a beautiful yellow flower.  After some research I discovered that it was International Women's Day. The flower was a  Mimosa flower, traditionally handed out to woman in celebration of the day.  What a beautiful tradition!  The canals and streets are filled with yellow in honor of women everywhere.  We still have a ways to go, but my oh my we've come a long way, and that is worth celebrating.  March 8th make sure you remember!

Jamie Brewer in NYFW
New York fashion week was filled with fall's upcoming trends.  The 70's are coming back, orange is every where, and not to mention fur and fringe.  But perhaps the most buzzed about trend was American Horror Story actress Jamie Brewer walking in Carrie Hammer's show.  The Down Syndrome actress commented,"Young girls and even young women...[see me] and say ‘hey, if she can do it so can I,'". Brewer, who has also worked as an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities, told Today. "It's a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are."  GIRL POWER.

Plus Size Model Take Over
Robyn Lawley has been in the media a lot recently for being the first plus sized model ever to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.  Personally I'm not  a huge fan of the magazine, but I love what this stands for.  Robyn spends a lot of her time promoting positive body image to girls everywhere.  Her main point is that you are born with your body, so love it and be good to it.  Plus sized modeling has always been a separate entity and I think now we will be seeing a lot more integration.  I think this is a huge step for the industry, and I'd like to see them moving more in that direction.

Hellogiggles.com
Okay we are all familiar with the oh so adorable Zooey Deschanel.  What you might not know is that she has an entire website devoted to positive entertainment.  Hello Giggles has created an online community for women to encourage, inspire, and learn from one another with out negative influence.  The site has everything from DIY projects to a live streaming of puppies playing.  As girls we spend so much time talking about others and not feeling good enough.  This community is a place to turn away from all damaging emotions and just enjoy a drama free space.
